In 1978, Dr. George Wade, fresh from a sports medicine fellowship in Southern California, arrived in Boise with a pioneering vision. His goal: to establish a specialized orthopedic practice dedicated to sports medicine. With the guidance of Dr. Richard Gardner, Idaho’s first sports medicine orthopedist, Dr. Wade began his journey. By 1979, he took over as the team physician for Boise State University and founded the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI).

ISMI was more than a clinic; it was a comprehensive approach to athlete care that combined progressive rehabilitation and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Wade, together with exercise physiologist James Moore and a team of dedicated professionals, laid the groundwork for what would become a leading sports medicine institution in Boise.

A Legacy of Sports Medicine Excellence in Boise

Idaho Sports Medicine Institute has helped shape the Boise community for over 48 years by delivering advanced sports medicine, orthopedic surgery, and rehabilitation services to athletes and active individuals throughout Idaho.

1978

Dr. George Wade founds ISMI after a sports medicine fellowship in California, bringing specialized orthopedic care to Boise.

1984

ISMI moves to the BSU football stadium, a pioneering private-public partnership.

1985

Dr. Kirk Lewis joins ISMI, enhancing the team with his UCLA sports medicine expertise.

1991

A groundbreaking fellowship program in sports medicine is established with FMRI, cementing ISMI’s role as a premier training facility.

2000

2004

Dr. Jennifer Rawlings Miller, MD joined ISMI in 2004, becoming Idaho's first female Sports Medicine fellowship trained Orthopedic Surgeon. She engaged in community patient care performing arthroscopic ligament/meniscus/cartilage restoration, total knee and shoulder reconstructions and trauma procedures. Dr. Miller became an active sideline medicine team physician for Boise State University and local high schools.
