Is my whole knee replaced?

Many people think that when a knee is replaced the entire knee gets taken out. This is not the case. What actually happens during a knee replacement is more like a “resurfacing”. Small cuts are made on the end of the bones wear the cartilage is worn down to allow for the placement of a new knee surface made up of metal and plastic. A good analogy is your car tire. Just like rubber can wear down on a tire the cartilage in your knee can do the same thing. A knee replacement is just like getting a new tire with fresh treads!
